The Common Shutwing dragonfly, Cordulephya pygmaea, inhabits streams and rivers, and is often seen in the riverside reserve three kilometres to the north-west. This small autumn flying species was not an expected sighting in the garden, but during the morning tree trunk inspection one was found perched on the Corymbia watsoniana.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/shutwingb.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"883\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the Yellow Gums produced some camera subjects, quite a number of these seed bugs, Daerlac cephalotes were in residence under bark flakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/seedbug.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/seedbugb.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"494\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Further up the trunk, a wandering Uraba lugens caterpillar became caught in the web of an annoyed small spider in the Theridiidae family. There was quite a bit of interaction between the two, but eventually the caterpillar freed itself and continued on its way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/urasp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/uraspb.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/urasp2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/urasp2b.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"491\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Velvet Ants, family Mutillidae, have been regulars on the tree trunks, usually wingless females, but on one occasion a winged male showed up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/vantm.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"840\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Females.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/vant.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"796\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/vantr.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"767\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A small Clerid beetle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/uk20.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"784\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And up in the Omeo Gum, the baby Schellenberg&#8217;s Soldier Bugs have dispersed, leaving their rather unique empty egg cases behind.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix25\/empties.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"671\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Some images will enlarge.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Various things, including one that was something of a surprise.
