On the other hand it&#8217;s been a bumper season in the garden for invertebrates, starting with the hover flies and the long-legged green flies. They have diminished greatly, but other species are in numbers not seen before, eg. sand wasps, Bembix species, and drone flies, Eristalinus species. Wherever we look on the bare ground the sand wasps are excavating nursery burrows.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the burrow to do further tunnelling,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp01bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp02bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp03bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After disappearing for a time and shovelling sand out, she conceals the entrance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/sandwasp05bl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drone fly, many more than we&#8217;ve seen previously.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/drone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/dronebl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With hot weather upon us the cicadas are of course making their presence felt with their shrilling.<br \/>\nThis is a small species not much more than an inch long.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/cicada.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/cicadabl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also clinging to the brick wall, a magnificent robber fly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/magnifico.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/magnificobl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A night walk with the camera was productive, this Eurymela species on the Brittle Gum trunk was being attended by sugar ants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/eurymela.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/eurymelabl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The homes of case moth caterpillars come in many shapes, sizes, and appearances, this one was living on the Grevillea asplenifolia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/case.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/casebl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And of course night time is ideal to photograph spiders, like this very striking Eriophora pustulosa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/eriophora.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/eriophorabl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A very large wolf spider has made her home in the prostrate Pultenaea pedunculata. She can&#8217;t be seen during daylight hours, but was snapped at her burrow entrance at night.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/wolf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/wolfbl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Male and female Helpis species were recently photographed on the meter box door, this is the feisty little female challenging the photographer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/jumperf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/spiders\/jumperfbl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Getting away from invertebrates, the Red Wattlebirds have been efficiently pollinating the Grevillea Moonlight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/moonlight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/bencruachan.org\/naturality\/pix6\/moonlightbl.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And down near the river the flying foxes are well settled in for Christmas.
